Godzone Hymns licences: closer
links with hymn writers
Most copyright licences bought by churches from institutions such
as Christian Copyright Licensing International
are based on developments that occurred before the advent of the world
wide web. Such licensors are 'middle men'
between hymn writers, whose work had already been published in hymnals,
and the churches, schools, etc.
wanting to make copies for use in their services of worship, Sunday
schools, assemblies etc.
Through the web, it is now possible for hymnwriters, if they wish,
to keep in direct contact with hymn singing
communities, no matter where they live. Instead of being one step
removed and using specialist licensing agencies,
hymnwriters can sell their hymns and licences directly and also keep
congregations informed of the new hymns
they have composed. In this way, hymn writers may become more responsive
to the changing needs of diverse
faith communities.
You can hear the full music and a sample of the text of each hymn
whenever you visit our website without going
to a bookshop and buying a hymnal or a CD. Our website takes the guesswork
out of your hymn buying.
When you buy a licence from us you also buy an authenticated copy
of each hymn, printed on watermarked paper.
You licence authorises you to make copies from this original, for
use only within your own parish or congregation,
school, chaplaincy or branch of an organisation.
You pay a one-off licence
fee. There are no renewals and we rely on your honesty in observing
the legal require-
ments of the licence you sign.

Why licences?
All creative works are covered by international copyright conventions.
These are observed by most countries.
Because writers and composers are creators of original works, they
hold the 'intellectual property' to those works
throughout their lifetime and their estate for another 75 years. When
you use their work, you benefit from their
creative endeavours. If you use their work without their permission,
this is unethical and illegal. It also means that
hymnwriters are stripped of the resources they need to write new sacred
songs.
You break the law if you make photocopies without permission of the
copyright holders. By paying a one-off copy-
right fee to Godzone Hymns, you gain a number of benefits.
