New Project: Waitangi CD Single

An exciting project has grown out of the Tussocks Dancing CD. A group of singer- songwriters is rehearsing the Waitangi Day song (Track 11) for release as a CD single. Jane met them in September on a Songwriting and Performance course at the Christchurch Polytech. They immediately saw the potential to re-record the song for use in schools and on television and a wide range of radio stations. Three different versions are planned: acoustic, rock and reggae. The co-director is course tutor, Andy Thompson.

Christchurch M.P. Tim Barnett has made many helpful suggestions. He says of the song: ‘I haven’t heard it done so well before – the sweep of history and the strong ecological theme.’

We hope to release Windborne in the week leading up to Waitangi Day 2004.

Any gifts towards the initial pressing costs of $6,000 will be gratefully received. Otherwise the project must wait another year for release on 6 February 2005, subject to gaining funding from the Waitangi Day Fund or from Creative Communities.

Review comments on Tussocks Dancing

The Rev. Dr Susan Werstein, The School of Ministry, Dunedin:

‘Tussocks Dancing is a CD filled with a vast range of music: Christmas carols and Communion hymns, wedding and funeral pieces, anthems for Church seasons and songs for children. Dr. Simpson's talent and devotion fill the hearer's heart and mind to overflowing.’

Poiema Voices at the launch of Tussocks Dancing at St Michael's

Jenny Boyack, Music in the Air, Summer 2003:

‘The suggestions for when and where to use the different tracks is a helpful stimulus for choir directors and worship leaders ... I didn't always agree with Poiema Voices' interpretation of particular tracks but this is positive, an indication that the music has depth and potential for choral directors and vocal groups to explore.’

Christmas music

Advent is often an ideal time to try something new and refreshingly different. A number of churches throughout the country have recently ordered one or both sets of the sheet music, in particular for their Christmas services. Last year three choirs, including Poiema Voices, sang Wisdom Shouts! at the Advent Sunday evensong at St. Barnabas in Christchurch.

The one-off fee pays for your customised set of the hymns published each year (10 in 2001 and 9 in 2002) and your licence, allowing you to make unlimited copies for your own use. People find the fee very reasonable.

Composers’ Workshop
19–20 March 2004

Many community choirs from Canterbury and the West Coast will take part in a weekend workshop hosted by the New Zealand Choral Federation. The aim is to introduce choirs to new works by local composers.

Four composers have been chosen. Participants will learn four songs from the Tussocks Dancing collection and works by the other composers. Hear them at the public concert:

Oxford Terrace Baptist Church, Chch

Sat, 20 March 2004, 6.00pm-7.00pm.
